Description

Colonial farmer John Lyman and his wife, Hope, could never have imagined that their 37-acre purchase of land in 1741 would turn into the 1,100 acres of scenic farmland that exists today. Through a history spanning ten generations, the Lyman family heritage was founded upon a commitment to preserve their land for future generations. In 1830, William Lyman took part in the underground railroad and several other family members published a letter that openly stood against the Fugitive Slave Law. Lyman Orchards is formally recognized as a site along the Connecticut Freedom Trail for the family’s involvement in the abolitionist movement. Today, family members of the 8th and 9th generations are directly involved in the business. Like their ancestors before them, preservation of the land remains central to their heritage, and the family continues to be innovative in its ways of upholding their traditions.
Lyman Orchards is one of the most popular family attractions in New England. Visitors at Lyman Orchards can pick their own produce, shop at the farm market for Lyman’s homemade pies, find their way around the sunflower and butterfly mazes, and they can even go golfing on one of the three golf courses owned by the Lyman family!
