George W. Saulpaugh, Jr., an entrepreneurial businessman, started the three generational apple farm in the early 1900s. Before specializing in apple farming, he owned coal, trucking and basket manufacturing businesses. When controlled atmosphere storage technology was developed, George and his son Laverne expanded their acreage and built many storage facilities to meet the growing apple demand.  Their facilities can store as many as 200,000 bushels of apples! Saulpaugh Apples has approximately 20 different apple varieties that range from tart to sweet and everything in between.
