Description
Maat produce is a vegetable cooling, packing and shipping company that began in the late 1970s. Many of their packing boxes are recyclable or reusable. Maat Produce has 5 main growers and a couple of small growers, all of which are family-owned farms. Brian Maat’s father originally worked for his neighbor in the 1960s before he and his partner decided to buy out the company and start shipping outbound to other states. In 2002 Brian and his brother Jeff bought out their father’s partner out and began worked with their dad for a couple of years. They helped expand the company and started shipping their products nationwide. Brian started working at the company when he was just 11 years old and worked his way up from there. He used the winter seasons to learn as much as he could about the industry, working for brokers and various other employers in the business. Since the season is short, Brian said he loves the the crazy push of having to work as hard as possible for four months until the October 1st deadline when they are done for the season. Brian has 5 children, and his brother Jeff has 4 kids, so he hopes in the future one of their children will take over the business.
