Description

In 1993, Growing Power was an organization set up by farmer Will Allen to provide teens who needed work with jobs around his farm. Now, Growing Power is a national nonprofit organization that helps to provide healthy, high quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. They provide hands-on training, cooking demonstrations, educational outreach and technical assistance to people and communities in order to better develop community food systems. Growing Power grows, processes, markets and distributes food in a sustainable manner.

At Green City Market, meet father-daughter farmers Will and Erika Allen, both of whom are rural and urban farmers. Will is executive director of Growing Power and Erika is its Chicago projects manager/development director. In 2008, Will was awarded a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” for his work on urban farming and sustainable food production.
