Description
As one of the oldest and largest organic produce cooperatives on the East Coast, Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative (TOG) developed a business model that has successfully connected sustainable family farms to restaurants, retailers, buyer’s clubs and farmer’s markets since 1988. The farms discovered that by working together, they could coordinate crop production rather than compete. TOG now works with 44 member producers and about 15 additional growers to bring over 100,000 cases of locally grown, certified organic produce from farm to city 12 months of the year. Each of TOG’s growers is a sustainable family farm. Their growers farm as little as 2 acres of produce and as much as 60 acres, and all produce is certified organic. TOG has three primary functions for its growers: marketing of their crops, production coordination and setting quality standards which growers must adhere to.
