John Montague founded Crown Orchard Company in 1912. He sent his Pippin apples to the Queen of England, and she liked them so much she let them enter England duty-free, which is how Crown Orchard got its name. Owned and operated by the Chiles family for four generations, Crown Orchard Company now has seven major orchards that spread over a 15-mile radius and a total of 1,000 acres in central Virginia. Families throughout the state know Crown Orchard for its famed Carter Mountain Orchard, an orchard set on 200 acres of mountaintop with a panoramic view of Charlottesville. What started as a family business in 1912 has grown into the most successful fruit wholesaling business in the country.
